poupou huia te reo 2

certificate in tikanga and māori language for the home and community - Intermediate-Advanced (Level 5)

Poupou Huia Te Reo 2 is a level 5 online Māori language certificate teaching everyday Māori language relevant to the home, the whānau and the wider community. It is the sequel to our Poupou Huia Te Reo 1 online certificate and is recommended for advanced beginners to intermediate level speakers.

To be considered for this programme, you must have successfully completed Poupou Huia Te Reo 1 where you will learn to navigate the online learning environment, mūrau.

Poupou Huia Te Reo 2 is delivered entirely online and follows the daily activities of a whānau through a series of audio lessons and online activities to teach commonly used phrases, words and useful constructions. Additionally, traditional Māori pūrākau are used to help further develop language and understanding of the Māori world view. Language learned is immediately applicable to activities in the home, work and community; learning is supported by regular usage as you perform your everyday activities.

We recommend you spend around 12 hours a week on the listening activities, exercises and interaction with others in the course. You don’t have to sit at the computer to do this; download and listen to the audio while commuting to work, spend your lunch break doing activities, or when the tamariki have gone to bed. The best thing about this course is that you can learn in your own time, at your own pace by completing weekly kōwae (modules) allowing you to catch up if life takes over or plan ahead and complete a few modules at a time, and with others.

Language development requires practice, so apply the learning as you engage with people, pets, things or even imaginary listeners. It is recommended you spend an additional 8-10 hours practicing outside of the 12 hour engagement with the online material. If practice is woven into your everyday activity it will not be an imposition. Encourage your whānau to take the journey with you, which will strengthen your own journey and allow you to practice and use the sentence structures together.

Access to the internet is required because all the content is delivered online. Feeling rusty after a while away from formal learning? Don’t be concerned; the more you put into the course, the more you will get out of it. Tutor support will also be available for the duration of your study.

This qualification is a perfect start for anyone looking to begin full time studies in Te Reo Māori or a perfect introduction to our online learning platform, Mūrau and further studies at Te Wānanga o Raukawa.
