Ngā Akoranga - Year 1
The Heke Puna Maumahara (HPM) is the first year of the three year bachelor degree and consists of te reo Māori, iwi & hapū, rorohiko (which are compulsory components) and the specialist subject. The foundation of this tohu is mātauranga Māori which provides the students with another approach to Information Management in contemporary practice offering basic skills in libraries, museums, and archives as well as strengthening iwi & hapū.
The programme develops bilingual and bicultural managers of Māori information resources in Māori and non-Māori organisations.
Future pathways for graduates are:
- developing libraries for whānau, hapū and iwi
- caring for whānau, hapū, iwi information and/or taonga
- database development in particular for whānau, iwi and hapū
- research mahi in both the public and private sector as well as with Māori organisations and
- further study.
This one year Heke (Diploma) is NZQA approved at level 5.

The aim of the Poutuarongo Puna Maumahara (PPM) is to produce graduates who are able to design, implement and manage systems to suit whakapapa based rōpū, other Māori groups as well as other organisations. It develops bi-lingual and bi-cultural managers of Māori information resources in Māori and non-Māori organisations.
Future pathways for graduates are:
- developing libraries for whānau, hapū and iwi
- librarian positions
- database development in particular for whānau, iwi and hapū
- research mahi in both the public and private sector as well as with Māori organisations and
- further study.
This three year Poutuarongo (Bachelors Degree) is NZQA approved at level 7.
